Straight 8
The Straight 8 is our latest design, one we feel to be the best of all of these
Whamo variants
The Straight-8 is a direct descendant of our SuperWhamodyne, Whampipe, Hyperwhamodyne,
UltraWhamodyne and FIM Model 4 projects.
We used 8 of the same five inch aluminum cone full range drivers as used in the
FIM Model 4 and Ed Fallon's Ultrawhamodyne, and a 1" titanium dome tweeter. These
drivers are treated with a proprietary coating on the cones and domes, damping
compound is painted on the magnet and frame structures, and additional damping
material is added behind the tweeter dome. These treated drivers are placed in a
vertical array in a 11.5" x 12" x 49" vented tower cabinet. A
simple first order crossover is used, and we set the speaker up to be biampable.
We've achieved 96 dB sensitivity, wired them for a tube friendly 16 ohms nominal impedance, and
gotten a very flat frequency response conservatively estimated at 54-20kHz (but really more like 40Hz - 22
kHz in most listening rooms that have been tried so far). The beauty of this design is that the 5" drivers are doing
all the work below about 4kHz, and the bass from multiple small woofers is fast as lightning,
musical and punchy.
With 96 dB sensitivity and an SE friendly 16 ohm nominal impedance, the speakers
have worked great with B-Glows, Paraglows, Paramours and Doc's own SE parafeed
SV-811 3A monster.
And so we feel that we
now have a design we can offer commercially, with confidence that it will work
well with most any SE amp, while being manageable in size and attractive enough
for the tastes of a significant other. To

8 plans 'n' parts kit page.
