Enter "the Wing".
In a four driver version of the Whamo, Doc was trying to reduce diffraction loss by adding "wings" to the tower, slightly angled back to simulate the 'truncated' enclosures shown to be superior by Harry Olson.
Surprisingly, the wings also did a remarkable job of focusing and bringing up the midrange.
Ed had made a pair of wings for one tower, with the idea of reducing diffraction loss. When one of these wings was attached to the inner side each tower the image sharpened up considerably and the midrange came into much better balance with the bass. A wing on both sides should improve the situation even more.
The wings are angled back about 22 degrees. Note also that the drivers are mounted off center in the front baffle to decrease the notch filter effect that occurs with drivers placed on the baffle center line.
